In what can be described as a surprising twist, a domestic violence suspect was heard commending a Los Angeles Police Department officer who shot and injured him during a confrontation at a South L.A. home in May.
According to KABC, the officers responded to the home after authorities received a domestic violence report. The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Shamar Bennett, was seen holding what looked like a rifle when the officers arrived at the scene. Authorities also said the suspect was likely seeking “suicide by police.”
The incident in question was captured on a bodycam. In the footage, the officers are seen opening fire on Bennett after they enter the home and spot him armed with the rifle in question. But after Bennett is shot, he’s surprisingly heard commending an officer.
“That was a good shot though… that was a good shot,” Bennett is heard saying.
The officers went to the residence in question after a 911 call was made. “He’s hitting her! My son! My son is hitting his baby’s mom!” an agitated woman was saying on the call. “He won’t stop. I’m trying to tell him to stop. Please!”

Prior to entering the home, screams could be heard from outside, and the noise was captured in the footage. A minor is also seen approaching the officers as they make their way into the home. “My mommy! My mama!” the minor is heard yelling.
Upon entering, the officers ultimately encounter Bennett, who is seen with the weapon in his possession. The officers shortly open fire, and a woman is later seen coming out of a room. Police said they safely evacuated that woman and three other people from the home, KABC reported.
Bennett was shot in the leg, and the video shows him crawling toward the officers after the shooting. He received medical attention after he was arrested, and authorities also said that the rifle in question could discharge metallic BB rounds.
Authorities have since brought a slew of charges against Bennett. Police also said Bennett was the only injured person from the confrontation.
