Located between the N3 highway and the wealthy suburb of Sandton is Alexandra, which is also located a few miles away from Johannesburg, South Africa.

Once referred to as “the Dark City” because the entire area lacked electricity, Alexandra is reportedly one of the poorest townships in South Africa.

However, it is not just known for its poverty. Playing a significant role in the nation’s anti-Apartheid Movement, “Alex” as it is most-commonly called, also served as the former homes of internationally renowned jazz great Hugh Masekela and former South African President Nelson Mandela, who is said to have rented a room in there in his youth.

The township has two gigantic trampolines that local youth pass the time with. Here,  you can view the photos of the Guardian’s Kim Ludbrook.
