African Woman Elected as the New Chief Prosecutor for the International Criminal CourtFormer Justice Minister of Gambia, Fatou Bensouda was unanimously elected as the new Chief Prosecutor for the International Criminal Court by the ICC Member States on Monday.

Bensouda will officially take on the position from presiding Prosecutor, Luis Moreno- Ocampo in June 2012. Bensouda has acted as Ocampo's deputy since 2004.

Bensouda, who described her nomination as a humbling experience has promised to represent all states fairly.

"The African continent has again shown its support and its engagement in favour of international justice and the court. But let me stress: I will be the prosecutor of all the states parties in an independent and impartial manner," she said.

Africa is proud of Bensouda, and we wish her a successful tenure.
