Students Close University in Sierra LeoneThe BBC reports that around 1,000 students have occupied the university of Sierra leone (Fourah Bay), the oldest university in West Africa, by burning tires and changing the locks on the university buildings.

The occupation is a protest in response to the expulsion of 31 students for leading the occupation of hostels. The hostels, which have been closed for two years due to unsanitary conditions, are where many people still make their homes.

The protests broke out before examinations were completed. As a result, they have been postponed until further notice. University officials are holding crisis meetings to discuss a response to the protestors.

The Executive of the National Union of Sierra Leone Students (NUSS) has publicly pledged support to the university students.
