A Cleveland woman accused of fatally stabbing a 3-year-old boy and wounding his mother outside an Ohio supermarket has been declared incompetent to stand trial. Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge John Russo ruled on Friday that Bionca Ellis, 33, will remain hospitalized indefinitely.

There is a possibility she could face trial in the future if her condition improves, according to the Associated Press.

Ellis, initially set with a $5 million bail following her attack, was scheduled for trial on December 9.

On June 3, in the Cleveland suburb of North Olmsted, Ellis encountered Julian Wood and his mother, Margot Wood, inside a Giant Eagle grocery store. She followed them into the parking lot, where the attack occurred.

As the mother was loading groceries into her vehicle, Ellis suddenly attacked, stabbing the woman’s 3-year-old son, Julian Wood, twice in under five seconds before walking away.

The boy died at the hospital, and Margot Wood was treated for a shoulder stab wound sustained while trying to save her son from the cart during the attack.

Authorities believe the attack was a random incident and have not provided a motive.

Ellis is represented by the public defender’s office, which typically does not comment on ongoing cases.
