Isat Buchanan, the attorney behind Vybz Kartel’s release from prison after 13 years, has been announced as a parliamentary candidate for Jamaica’s main opposition party, the People’s National Party (PNP).
Per Loop Jamaica News, Buchanan, whose father is reggae legend Big Youth, will vie for the parliamentary seat in the East Portland constituency during the general election in September 2025.
“With this confirmation, the PNP now has a total of 63 candidates as it prepares to contest the upcoming general election and advocate for the Jamaican people,” the PNP said in a statement on Tuesday.
The announcement comes after Vybz Kartel and Buchanan were spotted at the PNP’s 86th annual conference in the capital, Kingston, last month. Collin ‘Shaka Fame’ Bell was initially PNP’s candidate for the East Portland constituency. But Bell tendered his resignation, paving the way for Buchanan to replace him after the former claimed that some PNP members in the constituency were not giving him enough support.

The PNP said Buchanan is “prepared to represent the interests of the constituents with commitment and focus.” He will square off against Ann-Marie Vaz, who has represented East Portland since 2019. Vaz is also a member of the current administration, the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), per Loop Jamaica News.
“He (Buchanan) has set his sights on initiatives such as improving education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for residents. He envisions a constituency that prioritises collaboration, growth, and empowerment for all,” the PNP said.
Buchanan also responded to the announcement, saying that he was “honored” to be granted such an opportunity. “I am grateful for the opportunity to meet the needs of the people. Together, we will build a brighter future, ensuring that every voice is heard and every dream is realised,” Buchanan said.
“I see you; I hear you; I am you. Impossible is nothing! This is our moment for change!”
Buchanan was very outspoken during Vybz Kartel’s incarceration and campaigned for his release. He appealed the dancehall legend’s conviction in Jamaican courts as well as the United Kingdom’s Privy Council.
