A group of coworkers tested their faith and won after purchasing a Powerball ticket from a Walmart in Charlotte.
The winners, known as The Money Team, got their $3 voucher from Walmart on North Tryon Street, near Interstate 85, in northeast Charlotte.
In the August 23 drawing, their ticket matched the numbers on four white balls and the red Powerball, winning them $50,000. When the 2X multiplier was applied, the prize was raised to $100,000 because it was a Power Play coupon.
When the coworkers met at lottery headquarters to claim the win on September 2, they told each other, “We really won the lottery,” according to the NC Education Lottery.
Dwane Heyward of South Carolina, one of the six coworkers, said that when she first heard that the group’s ticket had won, she wrongly assumed it was just worth $500.
They didn’t know they had won $100,000 until the whole “Money Team” connected over a phone call.
“We didn’t believe it until it happened,” Heyward remarked.
The money that The Money Team earned after taxes came to $71,751.
Powerball is one of six draw games in North Carolina where players can buy their tickets at a retail location or with Online Play through the lottery’s website or the NC Lottery Official Mobile App.
