During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday, A$AP Rocky opened up on the first time he met Rihanna and how that encounter left him feeling a “little embarrassed.”

The 37-year-old rapper and actor said that his first encounter with Rihanna, 37, happened several years ago, adding that it was outside a New York City nightclub, PEOPLE reported.

“I wasn’t famous at the time. She was obviously Rihanna. And I couldn’t get in! The bouncers didn’t want to let me in,” Rocky, born Rakim Athelston Mayers, recalled. “I was with my friend, the late, great Virgil Abloh and Matthew Williams, and we kinda was getting into it with the bouncers and she came out and we locked eyes right away. I was just like, in a daze.”

Rocky also stated that Rihanna did not step in to enable him gain entry to the club. He said Rihanna seeing him getting into it with the bouncers left him feeling some type of way.

“I was a little embarrassed that she caught me bickering with the guard and stuff like that,” he said.

Though their first encounter was seemingly awkward, Rocky and Rihanna eventually became longtime friends before they started dating in 2020. The power couple currently share two sons and a daughter.

Prior to taking his relationship with the billionaire singer and businesswoman a step further, Rocky disclosed that his mother actually convinced him to date her, Page Six reported.

“My mother used to say sh*t like, ‘I know you like this girl that you [are] with right now’ — I ain’t gon’ say no names — ‘but I want you with RiRi,’” Rocky said on The New York Times’ “Popcast.”

“It’s like, ‘Ma, why you keep saying that? That girl don’t even want me like that,’” the Don’t Be Dumb rapper added. “Mothers know best,” he continued.

“I’m thankful that [Rihanna] was put in my life at that time because any time prior to that I don’t think I was ready for something like that. I don’t think she was either.”

Rocky also said in the interview that Rihanna “was always my boo,” and he “always f—ed with her.”

“We were on the same page. Born the same year. My dad is from her country … When I go back, I get to see both sides of my family. It’s so many similarities, it’s just funny. We laugh about it a lot,” Rocky said about the things they share in common.
