A first-grade talent show took an unexpected and powerful turn the moment the curtain rose. A young boy’s self-assured performance, destined to reach millions online, instantly captivated the auditorium.

With a surprising level of focus and confidence, Julian began his performance of “Dear Mama” as the first notes of the song played. The Tupac Shakur classic, which is a well-known emotional tribute to mothers, deeply resonated with many in the audience.

His mother, Raquel, told People, “When Julian told me he wanted to perform ‘Dear Mama,’ I honestly smiled and thought, that sounds just like him.” While music has always been a natural outlet for Julian, seeing him step onto the stage was still a surreal experience for her.

Raquel described being “overwhelmed with pride” the moment the curtains rose. She knows that seeing her young son perform is a memory she will cherish forever.

The young boy’s connection to the song was years in the making. Raquel said he has grown up surrounded by a wide range of music that spans generations and genres.

Julian grew up with the music of artists like Tupac, Eazy-E, Ice Cube, and Kanye West consistently playing, whether at home or during car rides. Because of this, he naturally developed a familiarity with the rhythm, narrative, and feeling conveyed in the music.

Raquel believes her son was truly moved by the powerful message of “Dear Mama.” She explained that he frequently expresses his love and appreciation for her and acknowledges the vital role she plays in his life.

“‘Dear Mama’ has always been playing in the car, so it was a song he already knew and connected with naturally,” she explained. To her, the performance was all about the song’s meaning.

The performance in the auditorium was well-received, earning applause. However, when Raquel posted the clip to TikTok, she didn’t anticipate it going viral; she only expected friends and family to see the moment.

“I was completely taken aback by the response,” she said. Within hours, the video passed a thousand likes and views, signaling that something bigger was unfolding.

The video’s growing view count, with over 17 million views, was matched by a flood of comments from people globally. Many were moved to share private stories about their mothers, childhood recollections, and the feelings evoked by the song.

Raquel found the massive display of affection to be overwhelmingly positive, expressing profound gratitude for the number of people who resonated with her son’s act.

Julian’s confidence and heartfelt song choice received widespread praise from parents, teachers, and community members, who offered messages of support and shared their appreciation.

The proud mom defended the song choice despite some criticism. She stated that the choice doesn’t define her or her children, highlighting her confidence in her identity as a mother and the values she teaches. For her, the real importance lies in the genuine love, respect, and intention of the performance.

Netizens were deeply connected with the performance, sharing strong personal reactions. Raquel noted that a large number of comments focused on themes of loss, remembrance, and gratitude.

“‘Dear Mama’ is a powerful song,” she said, noting that its interpretation varies with each listener’s life experience.
