Carrying cash and credit cards can be a hassle and with the digital world continuing to move in a paperless, wireless direction it makes perfect sense that the Snapscan app is growing in South Africa. Various coffee shops throughout Cape Town, Johannesburg and Stellenbosch have started using the app and their customers are quite pleased.

According to CNN, Snapscan is a smartphone mobile app that connects participating merchants with customers who rather have their phone scanned than to reach into their purse or wallet to make purchases. The app is linked to their bank account through a pin, so when entered they can scan the code and the money is debited from their account. The process is similar to that of a typical debit or credit card transaction.

The app was created in South Africa by co-founder Kobus Ehler and designed specifically for the African market. Considering that South Africa is the largest smartphone market in the sub-Saharan region it’s a great time for the app to boom. It’s currently only available to participating merchants, but the company is working to expand. Not that Africa is new to paying for goods and services with smartphones the practice is growing across the continent.

Many South African cafés and eateries have embraced the new technology, check out a couple below:
