American rapper Kanye West is having an intriguing time in Uganda where he is vacationing and recording his forthcoming album – Yandhi – which he plans to release on Black Friday, November 23.
He and his reality TV star wife Kim Kardashian danced with dozens of orphaned children during a visit to the Masulita children’s home in Wakiso district on Tuesday, hours after visiting Trump-loving President of Uganda Yoweri Museveni.
While Kanye West recorded live on Twitter, they danced to “We Got Love”, a new song with Teyana Taylor which they recently performed together on Saturday Night Live. Kanye donated several pairs of Yeezy sneakers, Beats by Dre headphones and T-shirts to the children at the orphanage run by the NGO, Uganda Women’s Effort to Save Orphans (UWESO), which was founded by Ugandan First Lady Janet Museveni some 32 years ago.
“We shall be back to work with Uweso Children’s village to make sure the children get a better life,” Kanye said after he pledged to support the children by constructing a dormitory and playgrounds.
Upon departure from the orphanage via a military chopper, UWESO’s CEO, Jennifer Aguti, gave Kanye West the NGO’s magazine to sign and he said with delight: “What did you call this? … We need to make MAGAzines … We have to make MAGAzines [he laughs] … Make Africa Great Again.”
Kanye was accompanied to the orphanage by Minister for Tourism, Godfrey Kiwanda, Minister of Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, Eng. Hillary Onek among other government officials.
Kanye West met with President Museveni on Monday who reportedly gave him and Kim Ugandan names.
“The visiting couple was excited by the Ugandan names given to them by the President. Kanye West received the name “Kanyesigye”- meaning, I trust, while his wife was named “Kemigisha”- meaning the one with blessings from God,” says the Ugandan State House in a statement.
It added that the controversial rapper described Uganda as his second home and informed the president that he wants to build a world-class tourism school in the country to support the tourism industry and that of the East African region.
Kanye West offered the 74-year-old Ugandan leader, who has been in office since 1986, a white pair of his signature Yeezy Boost shoes, while Museveni offered the couple a signed copy of his book, Sowing the Mustard Seed: The Struggle for Freedom and Democracy in Uganda.
Kanye, his wife and first daughter North West are staying at the Chobe Safari Lodge in Murchison Falls which lies close to the world’s longest river, River Nile.
While recording in a makeshift studio built in a fully-equipped white dome overlooking the park, Kanye live-streamed some sessions on Twitter as he danced to some African songs in the company of some Ugandan artists.
He has promised to work with Ugandan artists in the future as he ended his 5-day stay in the country on Tuesday. Kanye West is reported to be headed to South Africa.
