In a heartwarming moment of recognition, Good Morning America surprised Armorion Smith, a 21-year-old from Detroit, who has taken on the role of caregiver for his four younger siblings after the tragic loss of their mother. Smith became their primary guardian after their mother passed away from breast cancer earlier this year, and his story of selflessness has captivated the nation.
On November 6, 2024, Smith and his younger brother Armond were invited to appear on the morning show, where they met co-anchor Michael Strahan. During the segment, Strahan led the brothers outside to reveal a brand-new GMC Acadia, donated by Detroit GMC Dealers.
The surprise didn’t stop there. The brothers were also presented with a $40,000 check from Cash App and a trip to Disneyland Resort, including access to Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure. These gifts were meant to support Smith as he continues to care for his siblings.
The emotional moment left Smith visibly stunned. “Thank you so much! A brand new car, what?” he exclaimed, overwhelmed with gratitude as he embraced Strahan. The surprise brought a much-needed sense of relief to Smith and his siblings, who have faced overwhelming challenges since their mother’s death.
Armorion Smith, a college football player and criminal justice major at Michigan State University, assumed legal guardianship of his four siblings—Armond, 16; Avaugn, 15; Arial, 11; and Amaira, 3—after their mother’s passing. Describing his mother as a strong, hardworking woman, Smith shared that she instilled in him values of resilience and loyalty. Before her death, Smith promised his mother that he would keep the family together, a commitment he now fulfills every day.
“If I don’t step up, who could they turn to?” Smith said. “I’m just happy we’re all together. That’s just the biggest thing. I’m gonna be their protector.”
Balancing school with the responsibility of raising his siblings has been no easy feat. In addition to his studies at Michigan State, Smith has taken on the roles of caregiver, provider, and protector. His sister Aleion, 19, helps care for the family at home, and the family has relied on community support, including a fundraiser to help cover living expenses.
Aleion expressed deep admiration for her brother’s efforts, saying, “He’s a good man. And he’s doing right by us. I’ve gained a lot of respect for him because he stepped up and did something that none of our fathers could.”
Smith’s siblings also recognize the sacrifices he’s made. Armond, his 16-year-old brother, praised him for always being there when needed. “He’s always helping me, giving me advice, making sure I stay on the right path,” Armond said.
Avaugn, 15, and Arial, 11, also spoke about how Smith has influenced their lives. Avaugn shared how his brother has taught him valuable skills both on the football field and in life. Arial expressed her admiration for her brother’s example and guidance in her studies, saying he motivates her to do her best.
While the loss of their mother has been devastating, Smith believes she is still watching over them. “She’s still here in spirit,” he said. “All the blessings we’ve been having, it’s like all the stuff she ever wanted. She’s just working miracles.”
