A 3-year-old boy from Pontiac is being celebrated as a hero after his quick thinking helped save his mother’s life. On the afternoon of October 9, Shantell Woods, who has epilepsy, was cooking when she felt dizzy and sat on her couch.

She then had a seizure and fell unconscious in her living room, with only her young son, Cody, present.

“I want to cry right now. He’s just my hero,” Woods told WXYZ.

Cody, seeing his mother unconscious, instinctively picked up her phone. He then held it to her face to unlock it before making a FaceTime call to a familiar contact.

“He called Kaya,” Woods recounted.

Kaya at first mistook the call for one from her friend Woods. However, she quickly realized something was wrong.

“Kaya, help mommy, help mommy,” Cody said during the call.

“I panicked. I was crying and going through the emotions,” Kaya said. “Come to find out it was Cody.”

“It’s amazing,” Kaya added. “I was surprised, but happy he knew what to do.”

Woods has been having a lot of seizures lately, more than 20 in the past few months. Her son, Cody, has seen them before, so he knew exactly what to do when this emergency happened.

“And he’s just a smart kid,” Woods remarked.

The young hero is already being celebrated by the community, with promises of free ice cream for the remainder of the year. Cody, who will have a birthday next month, was fittingly wearing a blanket as a cape during his interview about his heroic actions.

Meanwhile, the mother of two has set up a GoFundMe account to help with the costs associated with her epilepsy, diabetes, and high blood pressure diagnoses. She stated that these conditions make everyday life significantly more difficult.

She wrote on the fundraising website, “I am constantly worried about how I will provide for my family. Right now, I need support with medical bills, rent, groceries, and transportation to get my children back and forth to school. Every day is a struggle, and I am doing everything I can to keep my children safe and cared for.

“My dream is to give my children a good life and provide them with the things they need, but my health has made that very difficult. Any support would mean the world to us and would help us get through this challenging time. Thank you for reading our story and considering a donation to help my family.”
