Mathieu Kérékou

A bodyguard to Benin president Hubert Maga, Kerekou seized power from another leader, Justin Ahomadégbé-Tomêtin in 1972.

Kerekou was trained in Senegal and Mali but served in the French army for a year. He went to rule Benin between 1972 and 1991.
