Milwaukee is the largest city in Wisconsin, a state noted to have one of the largest racial disparities in incarceration nationwide. Segregation has contributed to income inequality, according to the research, and currently, the typical black household in Milwaukee earns just $27,834 a year, that is, 42.5 per cent of the $65,568 white median household income.
With a black population of 260,776 (16.6 per cent), the black unemployment figure is 16.1 per cent black while that of the white is 4.2 per cent. While the white poverty rate in Milwaukee of 7.6 per cent is one of the lowest in the country, the black poverty rate of 36.4 per cent is among the highest.
