Cameroon and Nigeria

There had been tensions between the two over the oil-rich Bakassi peninsula, but Nigeria ceded it to Cameroon in 2008 following an International Court of Justice ruling. The area had been administered by Nigeria from independence in 1960 until 2008. Cameroon had claimed sovereignty based on maps dating back to the colonial era. In 1981, the two countries nearly went to war over the dispute, but in 2008, the ICJ ruled in favour of Cameroon. This was supposed to end the row between both countries but recently, in 2017, there were reports that Cameroonian forces had killed about 97 Nigerian fishermen in the area. Nigerian authorities subsequently accused Cameroon of breaching an agreement to protect Nigerian citizens.
