Mohammed Ali, a boxer and symbol of the civil rights movement (Left) and Malcolm X --- The Independent

Almost everyone is talking about Marvel’s African superhero movie Black Panther and how it has become a defining moment for blacks and Africans in general. The movie, apart from highlighting its fictional use of high-tech gadgets also put a spotlight on the exploits of a black superhero who had a mission to protect his people and his throne.

That’s all fiction. But in reality, there were some black superheroes who served as martyrs for the freedom of black people in Africa and beyond. They stood up for the rights of black people and became a possible target for assassination by white supremacists. In effect, they died while fighting a good cause for their respective countries.

Here are six of these gallant superheroes.
