Demetria Antwonette Spencer, 25, was taken into custody after her 6-year-old son contacted 911 to report that his mother had abandoned him and his 2-year-old sibling at home.
The police said that just after 9 p.m. last Wednesday, they received a call from Spencer’s son and went to the residence in the 200 block of Northwest 84th Street, which is part of an apartment complex south of Larchmont Gardens Park in the county’s West Little River Area.
They stated that they came to find an appalling environment. According to police reports, the two boys “were indeed left home alone” with no supervision.
“Officers discovered as well that the residence was very dirty, did not have power, or food,” the investigating officer wrote. “The children appeared to be dirty.”
An arrest report cited by Local 10 noted that it took hours for authorities to find the 25-year-old mother who had been absent. They couldn’t reach her when they called the number the child gave them, and they couldn’t find her in the neighborhood.
According to the report, Spencer was apprehended by the authorities the following day around 2:20 p.m. on two charges of child maltreatment causing no serious bodily harm.
Local 10 reported that week that the 25-year-old mother of two was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $5,000 bond and a warrant for driving without a valid license.
If convicted, she may face five to fifteen years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
