Madagascar is an island off East Africa. A colony of the French, Madagascar gained independence on this day in 1960. With a size of almost 50,000 people, this beautiful island is known for its water bodies, sub-humid forests and the rarest animals in the world. Tourism is the main contributor to its GDP and according to its tourism ministry, the number of tourists visiting the country increased by 20% in 2016. This sector generated $702 million in that year.
