Nigerian chef, Hilda Effiong Bassey, better known as Hilda Baci, attempted the world’s longest cooking marathon in May 2023, and appears to have set in motion a chain of attempts to set new records in Ghana.
That which is yet to be confirmed is if her attempt triggered similar attempts at unique feats all over the African continent.
Hilda, who aside being a chef, is a restauranteur and an actress, prepared over 100 meals in 93 hours and 11 minutes, but the record was later broken by Irish chef, Alan Fisher, with 119 hours and 57 minutes.
From January 2024 till date, there have been a number of attempts at breaking and setting records all over Africa.
Here are 5 significant Guinness World Record attempts by Africans that have caused a stir in the world.
- Abubakar Tahiru
Tahiru, an environmental activist and a forestry student gained recognition as a new record holder for hugging the highest number of trees in an hour. It is on record that he hugged 1,123 trees, averaging almost 19 trees every minute.
Growing up in a farming community in Tepa in Ghana, he developed a keen interest in nature and its conservation while he was growing up.
2. Ace Liam
The Guinness World Records has recognized one year-old Ace Liam as the current record holder for the youngest male artist in the world. His award was announced at a press conference on Tuesday, May 14, 2024.
“We are thrilled to inform you that your application for Youngest Artist (male) has been successful and you are now the Guinness World Records Title Holder!” the confirmation letter read.
3. Felicity Asantewa
The newest record for the most cars washed in eight hours by an individual is held by Felicity Asantewa. She reached this milestone by beating the previous record with five cars and washed sixty cars in eight hours. Poised to demonstrate her commitment to empowering young women in Ghana and fostering gender equality, Felicity embarked on the record attempt on March 9, 2024 at the East Legon Go Go wash premises in Accra.
4. Keith Boyd
A British-South African man, Keith Boyd, currently holds the record for running the entire length of the African continent in 301 days, thereby breaking a 25-year-old record. The 57-year-old man achieved the record by running from Cape Town in South Africa to Cairo in Egypt on foot, beating the previous record by 17 days. He reportedly covered a total of 10,793 km (6,706 miles), passing through South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt.
5. Evans Nana Ekow Aryee
Fast-rising Ghanaian powerlifter Evans Aryee based in Belgium is a three-time Guinness World Record holder. He is currently the holder of the record for the fastest 400kg incline frame carry over 10metres in 8.07 seconds. He reportedly achieved this on the set of Lo Show Dei Record in Italy, Milan on January, 26, 2024. Available data shows that Evans broke his own record at 7.89 seconds against a Dutch challenger on January 29, 2024. He also set a new record for the most reps (9) in throne deadlifts totaling 1000kg.
