Still in Tanzania, MV Bukoba, which used to ply the ports of Bukoba and Mwanza, sunk in 1979. The accident resulted in the death of 849 people as per official Tanzania records.

Not only did then President Benjamin Mkapa declare three days of mourning but also criminal charges were brought against nine officials of the Tanzania Railway Corporation.
