“I can’t believe things ended like this… and it makes me so sad,” she wrote alongside photos of Gotti. “We weren’t on the best terms these past few years, but as I’ve always said, through our ups and downs, I will forever be grateful for everything you’ve done for me.”
She continued, “We made history, and that will remain infinite. I’ve always respected your musical genius and your ability to push me to be my best. The greatness and positive moments far outweigh the dark and negative times. I have always prayed for you to find peace. Sending love and prayers to the entire family. Rest well. Rest in peace, Irv.” The ‘Rock Wit U’ singer ended her tribute with praying hands and dove emojis.
Ashanti was discovered as a teenager by Irv Gotti and signed with his label, Murder Inc. Records, an imprint of Def Jam Recordings, in 2002. That same year, she appeared on Fat Joe’s What’s Luv? and Ja Rule’s Always on Time, which peaked at No. 2 and No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively. Alongside her debut single Foolish, which also topped the charts, she became the first female artist to occupy the top two positions on the chart simultaneously.
