Released in 2013, Belle is another masterpiece directed by British filmmaker, Amma Asante. The movie, which was Amma’s first major feature film, tells the amazing true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, the mulatto daughter of a British admiral and an African slave. It also highlights how she was raised by her father’s family, explores the narrative of her influence on legal rulings through her great uncle, Lord Chief Justice Mansfield, and how it eventually resulted in the abolition of slavery. Amma is a British screenwriter and Chancellor at Norwich University of Arts. Though she is of Ghanaian descent, she was raised in London. She nurtured her love for filmmaking when she starred in BBC’s Grange Hill, as reported by discover walks.
