Perhaps, the most famous on this list, Capoeira is a self-defence and martial arts dance invented by slaves in South America in the 16th century.
It began as a popular dance style brought along by slaves from Angola into Brazil but later, it became a means of survival for slaves who were running or had run away from plantations.
Capoeira is now a worldwide phenomenon with people learning to dance far away from Brazil.
