Cleveland Browns wide receiver David Bell took to Instagram on Tuesday to announce his retirement from the NFL at the age of 24, citing an off-field injury as the reason behind his decision.

Per TMZ, Bell’s 2024 NFL season ended in the second week after he suffered a hip injury. He was later placed on the non-football injury list.

“Several months ago, I was blindsided by an off-field injury that was beyond my control, which put my football career in jeopardy,” Bell shared in the post captioned, “Thank You Cleveland.”

“After consulting with medical experts and praying, I accept that continuing to play football would literally risk life and limb. Although it is the last thing I would otherwise want to do, with a heavy heart I am announcing my retirement.”

He added: “Football gave me memories I’ll cherish forever and taught me how through focus, selflessness and determination, the whole can be greater than the collection of individuals. Thanks to God for guiding me every step of the way and for the strength to chase this dream.”

Bell then went ahead to express his gratitude to the Browns, his family, fans, the team, as well as doctors and medical staff for their support and care.

“I’m so proud of what I’ve accomplished and intend to apply football’s teachings to my next chapter, and to help make the world a better place,” he concluded.

Bell played college football for the Purdue Boilermakers before the Browns selected him in the 2022 NFL draft. He featured in 42 games for the Browns, and his career records included bagging 41 receptions for 408 yards.
