The family of the late quarterback Dwayne Haskins Jr. is suing his widow for reportedly refusing to relinquish his ashes. Haskins, who played for Washington and Pittsburgh, died in a highway accident near Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 2022.
According to the complaint from Haskins’ family, they have “experienced constant harassment from the defendant [Haskins’ widow] whenever they have attempted to reference his name, image, and likeness in public forums such as social media.”
Dwayne Haskins Sr., father of the late quarterback, mentioned having an Instagram account removed due to his strong resemblance to his son and their shared name, as reported by Daily Mail.
“This decision was made despite the fact that Dwayne Haskins Sr. simply shares the same name as his famous son but has not otherwise posted any content on Instagram,” the complaint said.
Haskins, a highly-rated talent from Ohio State, was drafted 15th overall by the Washington Redskins in 2019. The New Jersey native played two seasons in Washington but did not meet fans’ expectations.
In 2021, he signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers as a third-string quarterback behind Ben Roethlisberger and Mason Rudolph.
In mid-March 2022, Haskins signed a one-year restricted free agent deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers, aiming to compete for the starting quarterback position following Roethlisberger’s retirement.
However, on April 9, 2022, less than a month later, Haskins ran out of gasoline in his rental car while training with his teammates in Florida on Interstate 595.
Haskins was struck by a dump truck while crossing the highway and was then hit by an SUV. A toxicology report revealed Haskins had a blood alcohol level of 0.24 and tested positive for several drugs, including ketamine and methamphetamine.
Following the incident, a lawsuit claimed that Haskins had been drugged and robbed by a group of individuals before his death.
