Sacked for whistle-blowing

Born Sanusi Lamido Sanusi on July 31, 1961, into the Fulani Torobe clan of Kano, he was axed from the Central Bank for whistle-blowing over $20 billion allegedly missing from the state oil company.

Sanusi’s suspension caused massive tumbling of Nigeria’s currency.

In a statement, it was explained that Sanusi was relieved for “financial recklessness and misconduct.” Sanusi would dismiss the allegation in an interview with Quartz, saying: “My sense is the government wanted me to stop a number of investigations and this was their way of getting me out of the way.”

He filed a suit in Nigeria’s High Court challenging his suspension but later withdrew it.
