Nigeria is one of the African countries with notable writers, including Amos Tutuola.

Tutuola was known for his book The Palm Wine Drinkard, which earned critical acclaim especially because of his unconventional writing style.  The book, which follows the life of an unnamed man who is addicted to palm wine, is written in pidgin English. Western critics have over the years termed the books as ‘primitive’, ‘barbaric or written in ‘young English’.

It took a long while for people to actually appreciate the genius of the book and consequently of the author, who died today in 1997.
