Five things Nigeria's first executive president, Shehu Shagari, will be remembered for

He was the only president of Nigeria’s second republic

Although he was democratically elected as the president for a second term in 1983, he was overthrown by President Mohammadu Buhari, taking the country back to military rule. Shagari then became the only president of Nigeria’s second republic.

Immediately after Buhari’s take over, Shagari and members of his government were arrested and charged of corruption. However, he wouldn’t face any jail time even after a series of military-backed trials, he was released.  He was however banned from  politics for life.
