She has earned fame as one of the world’s foremost scientific authorities in the field of HIV and Aids research

Karim Abdool is on the advisory board of the Higher Education and Training HIV/AIDS Programme (HEAIDS), a member of the HIV Center Strategic Advisory Committee, and a member of the NIH OAR Mircobicides Planning Group. She is Co-Chair of the UN Technology Facilitation Mechanism of the UNSDG, a member of the National Academy of Medicine (USA), a fellow of the Royal Society of South Africa, a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa, and a member of the African Academy of Science.

She is currently an Associate Director of the Center for the Aids Program of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA), an infectious diseases epidemiology center focusing on high-impact research on HIV, TB, and SARs-COV-2 epidemiology, pathogenesis, prevention, and treatment.
