Miles Myrie, the son of Jamaican reggae-dancehall legend Buju Banton, reportedly passed away in the United States. Jahazeil Myrie, who is one of Banton’s sons, confirmed Miles’ demise in an interview with Observer Online on Monday. He was 20.

“Yes it is true,” Jahazeil said. “It is not my thing to say, it is not my job personally to give out any personal information about Miles, my father is the one who should share any details, but Miles is an hortical yute, his soul was clean, so I had to say something.”

Jahazeil, however, did not reveal his brother’s cause of death or if he succumbed to an illness. “We grow up together one ah the time dem, and he always would motivate me to never give up,” he said about his deceased brother.

“He was a very motivational person no matter wah. When he was younger, he wanted to be a judge but as he got older, he got to love the rapping so he wanted to be a rapper.”

It is unclear if Banton, 50, has publicly spoken about his son’s death. Born Mark Anthony Myrie, Banton was released from prison in the United States in December 2018 after serving seven years out of a ten-year sentence on cocaine trafficking charges

In 2010, his album, Before the Dawn, won a Grammy for Best Reggae Album of the Year.
