Authorities in South Carolina have brought charges against an incarcerated man who allegedly set up a shotgun booby trap that killed his nephew at a home in Saint Matthews on February 24.
Per the New York Post, the fatal incident occurred at Alfonzo Brown’s home when his 34-year-old nephew Jordan Dove went there. No one was in the home at the time. The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office said the shotgun booby trap allegedly set up by the incarcerated homeowner activated and hit his nephew when he got to the residence.
Dove died of injuries in a hospital on Monday, March 3, per the sheriff’s office. “It was believed at the time, the residence may have been booby trapped,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
“A perimeter was set around the residence as deputies slowly made entry into the home where they encountered a shotgun that was rigged at the back door to go off once anyone attempted to gain entry. A further sweep of the residence showed the front door was barricaded shut with no other occupants inside.”
The sheriff’s department said it suspects that the individual who set up the booby trap wanted to harm law enforcement officers. It could, however, not be established when the trap was set.

“This was a very dangerous situation that appeared targeted at law enforcement. It is yet another example of the dangers faced by law enforcement everyday,” Calhoun County Sheriff Thomas Summers said in a statement on February 25.
Brown is currently being held in Maryland for a different January shooting that was non-violent, per the New York Post. Authorities said they will charge Brown with murder in connection with Dove’s shooting death. Summers told WIS that Brown will also be charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon because of his current incarceration.
“This is my opinion, he knew the crime she was going to commit when he left here and went to Maryland, he knew he would be on the run, he knew that he would be tracked back to Calhoun County, he knew that we would be coming out to get him, and I think he set it up for us,” Summers told WIS.
Dove was said to be with his teenage daughter at the time of the fatal incident. “My heart goes out to them,” Summers said about Dove’s family. “I mean, we will be saying prayers for them for a long time. This is a horrible thing. A horrible thing.”
