Authorities in Idaho have charged a suspect with first-degree murder after he allegedly confessed to killing a Montana woman who disappeared in December 2023. Per MTN News, Chris Foiles’ January 12 arrest in Idaho Falls comes after Megan Ashley Stedman was reported missing.
Stedman was last seen around Bozeman/Livingston. Prior to his arrest, Bozeman police had launched a search for a motorhome belonging to Stedman after she was reported missing. The vehicle was ultimately located after a witness notified police about sighting it.
Authorities in Montana then made their way to Idaho Falls after obtaining a search warrant, the arrest report stated. Officers with the Idaho Falls Police Department also kept an eye on the motorhome and later approached Foiles after he was spotted coming out of the vehicle, per the arrest report.
Upon establishing contact with the suspect, he allegedly said, “I am Chris Foiles, I killed my girlfriend, she is in the RV.”
Foiles also confirmed a woman’s body that was found by the officers in the motorhome was Stedman’s. The suspect during an interview with authorities said that he and the victim came to Idaho Falls on or around December 2023, MTN News reported.
Foiles said he and Stedman got into an argument before he stabbed her in the neck, adding that he also “intentionally stabbed Megan in the chest with the intent to kill her,” according to the arrest report. After noticing Stedman was still alive and making movements in the motorhome, Foiles said he then went ahead to stab her multiple times until those movements ceased, the report added.
A GoFundMe has since been set up by the victim’s brother to help raise funds for her funeral and two children. “Our Sister, Megan Stedman was taken from us tragically,” the fundraiser states. “This is a very difficult time. Several people have wanted to help so we decided to open a go fund me page. Every bit counts and is appreciated.”
