In 1963, after Kenya gained its independence, Kisoi Munyao, who was 25-years-old at the time, volunteered to hoist the Kenyan flag at the peak of Mount Kenya – the second tallest mountain in Africa. Prior to the historical hike, Munyao climbed several mountains in Ukambani, eastern Kenya. His son, Teddy Mutuku, climbed the same mountain in 2013 to hoist another Kenyan flag, marking 50 years since independence.
