Joel was born in Yaoundé, Cameroon, on March 16, 1994, and plays professional basketball for the Philadelphia 76ers. He led the NBA in scoring during the 2021/22 season, and is the second center after Moses Malone to average over 30 points per game.

He is also the first foreign player to lead the NBA in scoring. Joel played college sports for Kansas and declared for the 2014 NBA draft, where he was selected third overall by the Philadelphia 76ers, and signed a five-year contract of $147,710,050. He has played about 369 games.
