The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Plateau State said in a statement that a doctor accused of harvesting a woman’s kidney during a 2018 surgery in his hospital isn’t qualified to practice the profession.
According to Vanguard, authorities in the West African nation arrested Noah Kekere a week ago after a businessman alleged he harvested his wife’s kidney when she went under the knife at his hospital in the city of Jos. The woman has reportedly been in pain over the last five years as a result of losing the organ.
Kekere is currently receiving psychiatric treatment at Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) after he showed signs of mental illness over the weekend. In a joint statement, the Chairman of the Plateau State Chapter of the NMA, Dr. Bapiga’an Audu, and the Public Relations Officer, Dr. Istifanus Bako, said the association following investigations into the case determined Kekere is a quack doctor.
“This is to inform the general public and all concerned that Mr. Noah Kekere, who is currently being investigated over allegations of organ harvesting, is not a medical doctor,” said the statement.
“Diligent investigations by the association have revealed that he is a quack pretending to be a doctor. Further information will be made available following the conclusion of the investigative processes initiated by the NMA as well as the Nigeria Police respectively.”
Last year, Face2Face Africa reported that a pregnant woman was left in a critical condition after her womb and the urinary tract were stitched together by a medical doctor in Ondo State, Nigeria. The medical doctor was arrested by a team of Special Intervention Squad, following a report of unprofessional conduct lodged against him at the Police command.
Investigations by operatives of the Ondo State Police command revealed that the doctor, Rabiu Olalekan, performed a cesarean operation (CS) on the pregnant woman (names withheld). Further investigations to ascertain the doctor’s credibility revealed that Olalekan was an unlicensed quack doctor.
