For over 20 years, Grammy-winning rapper Lecrae has blended his Christian faith with hip-hop, carving out a unique space in the music industry with hits like “All I Need Is You,” “Sunday Morning,” and “Your Power.”

As faith-based rap struggled to gain traction in the mainstream, Lecrae built his career on his belief in authenticity and perseverance, knowing a greater impact could be made in years to come.

Lecrae, 44, founded Reach Records to give himself and other artists the freedom to create music without compromising their values.

After being told his music was “too Christian” by mainstream labels and “too edgy” by Christian ones, Lecrae decided to thread his own course despite the noise.

His label has since become a platform for many artists who share his mission of hope and authenticity in music.

Reflecting on his journey for Black Business Month, Lecrae spoke about balancing his artistry and entrepreneurship. “I grew up in hip-hop culture, not gospel,” he told ESSENCE. “I didn’t make traditional Christian music, so I had to find my own way.”

Early in his career, Lecrae distanced himself from the “Christian rap” label, which he felt was unfairly stigmatized as corny. “When I came in, I had a chip on my shoulder because people thought Christian rap was corny,” he said. “But I learned I was changing people’s perspective, and now I embrace it.”

Lecrae now sees himself as an ambassador, working to shift public perception of faith-based hip-hop. Through Reach Records, he has not only built a successful brand but has also empowered other artists to pursue their own paths without compromising their values.

Lecrae’s journey exemplifies how faith, vision, and perseverance can lead to success, even in an industry that often resists blending spirituality with popular culture. His continued mission is to inspire and elevate others while remaining true to his own values.

Lecrae looks to the future, and remains committed to spreading his message and creating opportunities for others to rise in the music industry, knowing there is a greater purpose to attain.
