Poem: Abigail’s Juvenile Reminiscence

African woman

Teenage girls between 13 to 19 years old are often the most vulnerable to heartbreaks, especially those that have not been exposed to the reality of life. They learn from movies and friends and are greatly influenced by them. At that age they are defenseless and easily deceived because they are unable to distinguish feelings from reality. Some recover from experiences, some never recover but as soon as they learn and begin to be purposeful, they convert their emotions to visions, their fantasies to possibilities, and their low self-esteems to big dreams.

On a bright Friday, it was hot and sunny…
She returned from work feeling hungry…
She ordered pizza and a cold bottle of Fanta…
Waiting its arrival, she quickly went to take a shower…
Abigail was now a famous, rich, and successful Entrepreneur…

As the bell rang, she rushed to answer the door…
Shocked to see who the delivery boy at the door was…
It was Iyke, that same Iyke, her high school choice…
She smiled as she reminisced on her high school experience…

Remembering February 14, 2003…
The day she blushed as she met Iyke by the classroom door…
Embracing him not minding his sweaty body odor…
At 14, all she wanted was to be like her associates…
To have a guy walk her home from the school gate…
Holding hands they walked by the road…
With rising emotions as the weather began to get cold…
Small sparks of lightning, rainfall was near…
He begged her to wait at his house till the weather was clear…
Assuring her of the presence of his siblings and parents…
He promised he wouldn’t try anything violent or insolent…
Attracted by his sweet, matured, deceitful tone…
He finally lured her in to his home…
They were all alone, he made it seem like a coincidence…
As she resisted his touch, he forcefully grabbed her and tore her dress…
She cried as she walked home under the rain feeling disappointed…
His professed love for her ended as soon as he got what he wanted…
Being misled by his appearance, she dropped her guard…
Two months passed, no word from Iyke, this made her sad…
Abigail didn’t know much, she was just 14…

Iyke professed love for her, and she innocently believed him…
All she wanted was to have a place among her peers…

She chuckles as she remembers those Juvenile Years…
Back then she swore she would marry him…
Twelve years later, she’s discovered bigger dreams…
Now she knows that not all that glitters is gold…
The guy who left her scarred now delivers pizza to her home…

Abigail has moved on, learnt from her mistakes, and focused on her dreams…

She paid for the delivered pizza, exchanged pleasantries, and promptly closed the door behind him.
