Jamaican reggae star Capleton was granted bail on Monday after spending the weekend in jail following his arrest on Friday for the alleged rape of a hairdresser.
The 51-year-old, whose real name is Clifton Bailey, was granted bail in the sum of 250,000 Jamaican Dollars (US$1,995) after he appeared before a judge in a St. Andrew Parish Court.
Capleton was warned not to speak with the complainant before he was let out of the court, which was filled with supporters. Celebrities like Queen Ifrika, Tony Rebel and Anthony Cruz were outside the court in a show of solidarity, reports local media.
The accused has since his arrest maintained his innocence and also reported the complainant to the police accusing her of attempted extortion.
The hairdresser, hired to groom the artist’s hair at a New Kingston hotel on April 28, 2018, accused him of forcibly having sexual intercourse with her.
She reported the matter to the police four days later and Capleton was arrested and charged following an interrogation.
The case will be heard in court on June 14.
Capleton’s travel documents were not confiscated after pleas by the prosecution. The reggae star Capleton is scheduled to perform at several shows overseas from May 25 to June 27.
