Saif Al Islam
The International Criminal Court (ICC) in 2017 called for the arrest of Saif al Islam, the son of the deposed Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi. Al Islam is accused of crimes against humanity in the rebellion that saw the assassination of his father.
In 2015, he, alongside other former Libyan politicians, was sentenced to death over war crimes connected to the revolution of 2011. Al Islam was sentenced in absentia as he was held by rebels in the country’s town of Zitan. He was however released in 2017 after spending six years in jail.
Al Islam is not the only Gaddafi son to be implicated in a scandal. His brother Al-Saadi Gaddafi was accused of murdering fellow footballer Bashir Rayani before the 2011 revolution. He was acquitted of the crime in 2018.
