Simone Gbagbo

The former first lady of Ivory Coast made headlines when she was sentenced to 20 years for undermining the state in the violence that followed the country’s 2010 elections. The violence claimed the lives of more than 3,000 Ivorians after Lauren Gbagbo refused to accept the victory of Alassane Ouattara.

Gbagbo was acquitted in 2017 in a different case in which she was accused of crimes against humanities and war crimes after a court in the country unanimously voted to free her.
