Jake Jeffries, a Roswell High School senior with Down Syndrome, had something to smile about on the night of Friday, October 10, when he received an honorary award for being the school football team’s number one fan.
Per Channel 2 Action News, Roswell High School’s star quarterback, Trey Smith, was initially crowned the homecoming king. But shortly after the coronation ceremony at the stadium, Smith, who is also a senior, quickly approached Jake and handed him the crown.
“It was a surreal moment,” Jake’s father, Scott Jeffries, told the news outlet.
Scott Jeffries said that Jake has always been present at Roswell High School’s football games since his first year, adding that his son ultimately received an invitation from coaches to lead the team on the field during one of their matches. It eventually became a ritual as he was repeatedly invited.

Jake’s commitment to the team was also rewarded as he was made a member of the training staff. Jake’s duty is to help fill up water bottles and give them to the team’s players.
Smith’s beautiful gesture to Jake at the stadium on the night of October 10 was met with loud cheers from the crowd. Smith was also praised on social media after the video was shared.
“Wonderful young man. His parents have raised him right in all the ways! What a leader,” a Facebook user shared. “Well done, Trey!”
“Young man you are amazing. This brought tears to my eyes. Your parents raised you right and I know they are so proud of,” another user commented. “This is what I would like to see more of.”
A different user also wrote: “Love this! Our world is getting better by the day thanks to people like this. God Bless!”
