Yahya Jammeh became president of the Gambia in 1994 after he successfully overthrew former President Dawda Jawara in a military coup. At the time, he was a 29-year-old army officer. Jammeh has been re-elected four consecutive times, and rumor has it that he will be seeking a fifth term in office.
