Senegal became the first African side to beat England in 22 games on Tuesday after winning 3-1 in a friendly at the City Ground.

The historic victory over the Three Lions was largely thanks to goals from Ismaila Sarr, Habib Diarra and Cheikh Sabaly.

“Fantastic night. We knew we could do something in this game,” Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“It was a tough game, but we showed our personality and showed we can play at this level.”

Senegal have not lost a game since January 2024, when as defending champions, Ivory Coast beat them on penalties at the Afcon last-16 stage.

BBC reports that Pape Thiaw started leading the team in December and currently has two wins and two draws.

England had won 15 times and drawn six in their previous 21 matches against African nations, the BBC added.

Tuesday’s game was England’s first defeat in four games under new manager Thomas Tuchel.

“Not good enough,” captain Harry Kane said of the game to ITV. “We had moments, but with and without the ball things aren’t clicking, we’re not finding the right tempo. We’ve lost that aggressive nature that we had.”

An excited Koulibaly linked his team’s victory to their Africa Cup of Nations win in 2022.

“It is fantastic. We are not used to making history and we made it when we won Afcon, and we made it tonight,” he said.

“We want to continue writing the story of Senegal. We wanted to show we have a good nation.”

The Lions beat Egypt on penalties after a goalless draw to win their first Afcon in 2022.

Sadio Mane, who had missed a penalty given in the sixth minute of the game, sealed the win for his country at the tournament hosted in Cameroon.

A holiday was declared by then-President Macky Sall to celebrate the country’s first-ever Africa Cup of Nations crown.
