An investigation has been launched after a video showed an Omaha police officer holding boxing champion Terence Crawford at gunpoint during a traffic stop in the wee hours of Sunday.
Per Bleacher Report, the incident occurred a day after Crawford, who is an Omaha native, was honored with a parade in the city after he wrote his name in the boxing history books on September 13 when he defeated Canelo Alvarez and was crowned the undisputed super middleweight champion.
In the video of the traffic stop that was shared on social media, an Omaha police officer is seen holding Crawford at gunpoint as he is asked to step out of the vehicle. Crawford is also heard telling the officer that he’s “not reaching for no gun” as he exits the car with his hands in the air.
In the aftermath of the incident, Omaha Mayor John Ewing Jr. and Police Chief Todd Schmaderer released a joint statement later on Sunday to provide information on the traffic stop.

“Shortly before 1:30 a.m., officers working in the downtown area observed a vehicle driving recklessly near North 12th and Capitol Avenue. A traffic stop was conducted at Cass Street,” the statement said.
The statement also said that an officer “observed a firearm on the driver’s side floorboard” while talking to the driver.
“For safety, all four occupants were ordered out of the vehicle at gunpoint. The driver was later identified as Mr. Crawford upon verification of his driver’s license and was issued a citation for reckless driving,” the statement added. “One passenger, a member of Mr. Crawford’s security team, was also found to be carrying a legal firearm.”
The statement further said that police ultimately confirmed that “all occupants are legally permitted to carry firearms,” and a “police supervisor and lieutenant responded to the scene at Mr. Crawford’s request.”
