Boko Haram
What began as a difference in ideology brought about the terror group in 2002. Established in Borno State in Nigeria, the insurgency sparked outrage when the group resorted to deadly violence as a way to oppose non-Islamic ideology and influence the introduction of Sharia law.
In its quest to achieve its ultimate goal, Boko Haram’s terror events increased and had both direct and indirect impact on the civilian population across Nigeria and neighboring countries.
The group has been behind high profile bombings, killing of police officers and military personnel. In 2010, they staged jailbreaks and attacked civilian targets across Nigeria. It has so far killed tens of thousands and displaced 2.3 million from their homes and was at a time the world’s deadliest terror group, according to the Global Terrorism Index.
They targeted schools, churches and kidnapped 300 school girls which drew international condemnation in 2014.
