The 28th edition of the quadrennial Summer Olympics is scheduled to begin in less than two months on August 5, 2016, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In anticipation of the world’s greatest sports festival, we present a brief history of Africa’s participation in the Summer Games since the inception of the modern Olympics in 1896.

Over the years, many African countries have had their flags flown during the opening ceremony before their athletes represented the nation during various Olympic events. But this is a look at the medals table and a countdown of the five most successful African countries in the history of the games.
