Egypt executed 15 people in December 2017 and imposed the most death sentences in North Africa in 2017 at 402 cases.

In 2018, Egypt executed five people for allegedly belonging to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group. Other crimes that earn the death penalty include treason, espionage and terrorism among others.

The African Union among other human rights groups has condemned these executions, calling for the abolishment of the death penalty.
