Soukous – Congo

Soukous, which means “to shake” is a popular genre of dance music from the Democratic Republic of Congo which traveled to France in the 1980s.

In recent times, soukous ndombolo, a fast-paced version of the dance has come under attack and attempts have been made to ban it in Mali, Cameroon and Kenya, making it more popular. In February 2005, ndombolo music videos in the DR Congo were censored for indecency, and video clips by artists Koffi Olomide, JB M’Piana and Werrason were banned.
