The Shakur Estate is opening Tupac’s Powamekka Café, a restaurant envisaged by the later rapper, in Los Angeles. The restaurant is a temporary takeover of the Sacramento-founded soul food restaurant Fixins Soul Kitchen.

The restaurant, which will be opened on June 16 at 800 W. Olympic Boulevard (aka L.A. Live), will provide soul food and an opportunity to learn more about the late rapper, Eater Los Angeles reports. The temporary restaurant will run from June 16 to June 30, with lunch through dinner hours daily, the report adds.

The move by Shakur’s family follows similar ones by Eminem, Notorious B.I.G and Jam Master Jay. In 2021, daughters of the Notorious B.I.G. and Jam Master Jay opened a New York-style pizza restaurant in the city.

“Powamekka Café was originally conceived while Tupac was alive, with the rapper labelling the idea as a place to ‘play and parlay,’ according to notes found by his family upon his death in 1996. And while he never got to see his vision realized, previous Powamekka pop-ups have hit New York City (back in 2017) and Fresno, California. Now it’s time for Tupac’s Los Angeles to get some love, with a full menu of lunch and dinner comforts food favourites like gumbo, fried chicken wings, and meatloaf,”  Eater Los Angeles writes.

Tupac Amaru Shakur was born in 1971. He grew up to become one of the most influential rappers of all time through his music, his portrayal in the media and the government’s treatment of him.

His death at just 25 years old has been a subject of discussion and controversies. Many still mourn the legendary artiste while others still believe that he is still alive, hiding somewhere in this world.
